A Glimpse of Vanguard’s 30 Years in 12 Months: Our Profiles of Impact Series

Each month in 2017, our annual calendar gave you a glimpse of some of Vanguard’s current and past clients. Through our Profiles of Impact series, we took you behind the scenes of our work with these organizations and agencies to showcase 12 moments over the last 30 years that have made our work both meaningful and impactful. We illustrated how progress through communications is possible every day. Below is a recap of all of those posts, in case you missed one!

JANUARY

Today, we know that stress is a chronic problem affecting the physical and emotional health of our nation. But 10 years ago, that revelation was still unfolding. It needed to be studied, processed and unpacked in ways we could understand and do something about. Starting in 2006, the American Psychological Association teamed with Vanguard and Harris Interactive to launch a comprehensive survey to assess the levels, sources and impact of stress nationwide. FEBRUARY

In 1987 — the year that both Conservation International (CI) and Vanguard Communications were founded — CI undertook the first-ever “debt-for-nature” swap between Citicorp and the government of Bolivia. Vanguard publicized the groundbreaking deal, wherein CI purchased a portion of Bolivia’s foreign debt in exchange for the protection and management of nearly 3.7 million acres in the Beni Biosphere Reserve. MARCH

Back in 2005, it was announced in a board meeting of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs (WCR)that long-time White House chef Walter Scheib was resigning. Immediately, WCR knew it had a tremendous opportunity to influence First Lady Laura Bush to make history and select the first woman for the role. Learn how Vanguard helped them do just that here.

APRIL

In 1990, Vanguard found itself in the middle of the most important environmental story of the year — the Exxon Valdez disaster. The catastrophe unexpectedly set the stage for the press conference Vanguard was in the process of arranging a month later on Capitol Hill, when we joined forces with the Earth Day 1990 coalition to launch a campaign that would culminate the following year on Earth Day’s 20th anniversary. MAY

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Vanguard has been working with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to raise awareness around children’s mental health since 1994. Over the past 23 years, the conversation around children’s mental health has evolved and SAMHSA’s annual Awareness Day event has evolved right along with it. Learn more here.

JUNE

In 2007, Vanguard began working with a unique coalition of leading civil rights organizations that was determined to address the challenges facing historically disadvantaged students and their communities. Known as the Campaign for High School Equity (CHSE), the coalition sought to promote policies to improve high schools so that all students graduate prepared for college or the workforce. JULY

In 2005, the Galvin Electricity Initiative set out to reinvent the electric power system, and create one that was more reliable, efficient and better for the environment. Vanguard provided communications strategy to support the Initiative’s efforts to bring the U.S. electricity system into the 21st century. Learn more about our multifaceted strategies here.

AUGUST

Since 2005, Vanguard has worked alongside SAMHSA to host the annual Voice Awards, which honors consumer/peer/family leaders and television and film professionals who educate the public about behavioral health. Through their work and personal stories of resilience, both groups of leaders demonstrate that people with mental illnesses and/or addictions can and do recover, lead meaningful lives, and contribute to their communities. SEPTEMBER

Since 1985, Farm Aid has stood with family farmers to raise awareness around the loss of family farms and raise funds to keep farm families on the land. Vanguard joined the fight in 1990, partnering with Farm Aid on all aspects of the organization’s public relations strategy. Since its first concert for a cause in 1985, Farm Aid has raised more than $50 million to promote a strong and resilient family farm system of agriculture. Learn what that means to people here.

OCTOBER

In 1978, a group of visionary members of Congress founded the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) in order to develop the next generation of Latino leaders. In 2015, CHCI launched its Virtual Leadership Institute to give program participants and community leaders a platform to share their personal stories, as well as their experiences with CHCI. To support the new program, Vanguard developed a strategic storytelling training pilot curriculum and tested it with CHCI’s interns, public policy and graduate fellows, alumni and senior staff. NOVEMBER

Unprepared to accept that drinking under the age of 21 is a rite of passage that should be monitored but not managed, SAMHSA has sponsored nationwide Communities Talk: Town Hall Meetings to Prevent Underage Drinking since 2006, to help communities facilitate dialogues on preventing and reducing alcohol use under the Underage Drinking Prevention Education Initiatives (UADPEI). In 2014 Vanguard began partnering with SAMHSA on the UADPEI work, applying the philosophy that Prevention is Possible — and the data is on our side. DECEMBER

In 1991, America’s infant mortality rate was extremely high. In response, the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau established the Healthy Start Program to reduce infant mortality rates, increase access to early prenatal care and remove barriers to health care access. Vanguard’s diversity and inclusion team worked with Healthy Start to reach women at high risk for having complicated births throughout the country from many different backgrounds. Learn more here.
