Shelby Giles of Vanguard Communications received the Washington Women in Public Relations’ (WWPR) 2018 Emerging Leaders Award in the Boutique/Mid-sized agency/Independent category. The award program recognized six outstanding young women in the Washington, D.C., public relations and communications industry who have made a significant impact in their field. The 2018 Emerging Leaders were announced at a ceremony on Tuesday, May 15, in Washington, D.C.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by Washington Women in PR for the work I care so deeply about,” said Giles. “I’m lucky to have an inspiring and supportive community of intelligent and driven women communicators in D.C. I look forward to giving back to this industry by encouraging other women professionals to pursue their passion.”
Nominees for the award had to be between the ages of 25 and 35 and residents of the D.C. metropolitan area. The chosen finalists and winners were communications professionals who have achieved impressive results with their innovative strategies. They were also selected because of their contributions to the field of communications, their potential to move the industry even further in the future, and their active engagement in their communities.
An account supervisor at Vanguard, Giles takes a research-driven approach to lead the conceptualization and development of health communications campaigns and materials, with a focus on underserved communities. She also has played an integral role in the implementation of a national initiative that mobilized community-based organizations to host, plan and promote more than 1,500 events across the country in support of underage drinking prevention.
“Communications is a powerful tool we can use to lift communities who risk going unseen and unheard. I’m grateful daily that I get to work with clients and colleagues who are helping make this world a more inclusive and equitable place to live,” said Giles.
“Shelby is truly deserving of this recognition and we’re thrilled to have her on our team at Vanguard. She embodies the spirit of our company – using PR to build opportunity, promote healthy behaviors, protect our environment and connect communities,” said Maria Rodriguez, president and CEO of Vanguard Communications.
