There is an abundance of information out there for PR professionals today, covering everything from best practices to trends to career development. But when you’ve just stepped into the PR world, how do you sift through it all? As a new PR professional, I understand the difficulty of trying to unearth helpful resources without getting overwhelmed. Below are a few resources that I have found useful as I begin my path in PR:
PRWeek provides a variety of PR news in several categories, such as for the corporate, technology and health care fields. If you’d like to receive newsletters and updates via email, you can create an account for free. You can access most of PRWeek’s features just by visiting the site, but you will need to pay for a subscription if you want more frequent emails and a hard copy newsletter. PRWeek also has a career center, a People in PR section, podcasts, webcasts and much more.
PRSA is the perfect resource for information about both PR in general and how to grow in your career. Their website features an All About PR section and includes an emphasis on diversity and ethics within the workforce. The Professional Development section shares information and links to conferences, workshops, trainings, webinars and other events that will help you build on your current PR and communication skills. You can even find your local chapter and join a community of communications professionals.
In addition, PRSA offers resources relating to job hunts, phone apps and writing skills. As with PRWeek, you can create a free account to receive newsletters in your email or pay to become a member so you gain access to even more resources and receive discounts for trainings, conferences and events.
Interested in all things digital? Then Digiday is the place for you. Digiday’s platform is similar to PRWeek’s and PRSA’s platforms, but is more focused on digital news (e.g., social media, augmented reality and digital companies such as Amazon). With a free account you can catch up on many of Digiday’s news articles, but if you want unlimited access to Digiday’s site, you can purchase a membership. With this membership, you can also receive a magazine in the mail, go to networking events and be a part of Digiday’s Slack community.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my search, it’s that each resource connects to another helpful resource. So, my advice would be to pick a few sites, sign up for emails if you want frequent updates and see which resources keep you interested over time. From there, you can find other resources based on recommendations from your colleagues as well. If you take the time to do a little research, you’re bound to find the information you need to impress your peers and become the best PR professional you can be.
